To Bluetooth or Not to Bluetooth? May not be the question you find yourself asking, but it is one that I have been asked often and as such have spent plenty of time thinking about.

The reason most people don’t ask the question is they are not aware that there is any other option. Networking Speakers being the major competition.

So, what are the differences between Bluetooth and Networking speakers? The most obvious is that Bluetooth is (originally) a one-to-one connection with your device (like your mobile device to your hands-free kit), there have been some upgrades to allow multiple devices to talk via Bluetooth. Whereas Networking is multiple devices all talking to each other whilst they do separate things, the same things or nothing at all (like the computers, mobile devices, smart TVs, and printer in your home).

These separate connection types also bring different pros and Cons to their respective speakers:

Range: for both connection types, range is affected by the environment, house construction material, number of people in the area, interfering radio waves, etc:

Bluetooth: 30ft (10m) approx.

Networking: 150ft (60m) indoors (this can be extended depending on the computer network, or the speaker brand being used).

Portability:

Bluetooth Speaker: generally, all Battery powered, making them fully portable

Network Speaker: generally, requires mains power at all times to work. Some are small and therefore easy to relocate however the new location will still require mains power which makes it difficult to label them “portable”. The Sonos Move and Roam are the notable exception and will be discussed latter.

Extraneous noise:

Bluetooth: When connected to a phone or tablet any noises that the device makes will come through the speaker, email/SMS notification and ringtone etc, and will interrupt the music you are listening to

Network: Typically, these devices talk directly to the source, Spotify, Deezer, Net Radio, meaning that the phone or tablet becomes a remote control and therefore separated from the speaker. Meaning no extraneous noise will be passed through.

Sound Quality:

Bluetooth: Due to the connection type all audio passed between the Mobile device and a Bluetooth speaker needs to be compressed. This will always compromise your sound quality. The amount of compression required has been lessened in recent years with upgrades to Bluetooth versions.

Network: Due to the Bandwidth available with modern networks compression is no longer required with Networking speakers. This increased bandwidth, coupled with the cost of storage coming down, has led to a rise in uncompressed formats (FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codex) and ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codex) and more streaming sources offering a lossless format. Tidal, Qobuz, Deezer and Spotify for example.

This leads us to “Who?” What brands do which?

Bluetooth speakers are available pretty much everywhere, with varying degrees of quality from Marshall and Bose to UE Boom and “the one that came in the Promo pack for the new *enter any purchase you recently made where they gave you a promo pack*”.

The Marshall Bluetooth speakers have been performing well, for a number of years and have a very comprehensive range. The Bose Soundlink range of Bluetooth speakers have also been a good quality unit for a long time.

Network speakers are not as prevalent but are starting to gain traction with the introduction of the Google assistant (Nest) products (Google Nest Mini, Nest Hub, Nest Audio) and Amazon Alexa Range (Echo Dot, Echo Show), however there are many Hi-Fi manufacturers that have been doing this style of speaker for over 10 years. There is the Yamaha MusicCast Range ( MusicCast 50 ), HEOS (Denon Home 150 / 250 / 350 ). Sonos have been making network speakers for over 15 years in the stand alone range they have the Play:1, Play:5, Roam, and the Move. It is worth noting that both the MusicCast and HEOS products also have Bluetooth in, and that all three Brands mentioned here also have other products that can link to their stand-alone speakers for a multi-room system within your household.

The Sonos Move and Roam give you the best of both worlds, as they are a portable network speaker with Bluetooth. This allows you to move them freely around your house and stream your music via your computer network and the Sonos App. Then when it’s time to hit the beach or down to the park, you can switch them over to Bluetooth and stream directly from your phone.

Where does this leave us? Well, as my Mum used to say, it's “horses for courses”. If you need a speaker to use while you are outside away from your computer network, then you look at Bluetooth Speakers. If you need it for around your house and aren’t planning on moving it too often, you look at a Network speaker. If you are thinking you need both or are just unsure then you can look at the Sonos Move, or Roam.

Case Study: Whale One

In AV integration, it’s not every day a random walk up turns into one of your more interesting jobs. But that’s exactly what happened to Maroochydore based outfit Complete Audio when Bill Carranza, Fleet Manager at Sunreef Mooloolaba, walked in the door and said: “We’re refitting a boat and wondering if you guys could do the work?”

“Sure thing” replied Andy Ovenden, “we’d love to have a look at it.”

Andy took NAS QLD rep Brendon McDonald along with him and they saw Whale One just before it went to drydocks to be stripped down and undergo a full refit of just about everything. Andy relates, “The only thing they didn’t change was the motors. It’s like a totally new boat.”

Kitted out in sleek black and white livery, she is now a highly polished, two-level, all weather friendly, 19-meter catamaran that can entertain up to 110 guests. Whale One is primarily used for whale watching tours but also doubles as a night-time pleasure cruiser on the weekends. Even weddings are held onboard.

THE CHALLENGE

Bill outlines some of the parameters.

“The audio system concept covered national regulatory requirements as a surveyed domestic commercial vessel, with limitations onboard in passengers and crew, to the other extreme of being able to entertain people.”

The brief called for full 360° audio coverage inside and out as customers often start the cruise in the cabin, then move to the outside when they are at sea and in potential range of whales. Sources included a CD player and radio, modulated PC-based messaging, paging from the cockpit, and roving mics for the tour guides. A hydrophone mic was needed to capture the deep-sea cetacean calls. Inputs were also required for visiting DJs and performers, with some portable speakers added for the weekend setup.

Keeping electronics working well in a harsh marine environment is always tricky. Finding space for them is equally challenging. Speakers would have to squeeze in wherever they could fit. A further complication came with the cabin’s construction materials – much made of a sandwich bonded aluminium panelling. Some existing wiring needed reuse in areas where new cabling would have required major structural alterations.

THE FIX

Brendon designed a sound system for Whale One to deliver neat distribution, efficient control, and ample reinforcement throughout the boat. Andy and his crew installed a Cloud Z4 four-zone mixer hooked up to an Ashly pema 4250.10 multizone amp. This feeds 10 SoundTube IW-31 flush mount speakers throughout the indoor areas and eight inDESIGN

ID-BGM6 surface mount speakers snugly fitted around the outer decks. For Andy, “you need 360° coverage on a boat. The six-inch two-way speakers give excellent coverage.” Bill agrees here but also “design-wise, they look fantastic.”

With the bonded panelling being difficult to cut, Andy worked with the boat engineers to install a 45° angled bulkhead along the top corners of the saloon.

“Having that space behind the new panel allowed us to get the depth for the four-inch can to fit. It also pointed the speakers towards the centre of the saloon area instead of being flat in the ceiling.” This gave much better coverage throughout the space: “It’s safe to say that the sound achieved in the saloon exceeded everybody’s predictions.”

This new moulding also provided a convenient location to mount local volume controls in the saloon. These can be adjusted independently of the main controls located in the helm. Boat-wide announcements can be done here with a Cloud PM4-SA paging mic and guides use either a Parallel Audio lapel or handheld mic to communicate via the Stage 100 wireless receiver.

The helm also includes the ‘rack’ location. With space at a premium, Andy’s crew crawled under the dash to access wiring in the rear of the audio system, but it all fits in neatly with the rest of the instrument panels. A PC feeds messaging and advertising audio into the mixer directly while video is digitally modulated over the existing antenna system to save rewiring.

With all the whale watching requirements met, some extra thump was added for Friday and Saturday night pleasure/party cruises. Complete Audio matched a pair of dBTechnologies Opera 10 boxes with two Sub 612s and these patch in via inDESIGN WP2K3XF XLR wall plates when required.

THE RESULT

Bill loves all the different options that the system provides. “We got a ton of flexibility, and that’s what we really needed. That’s the thing that is so brilliant about this system.”

He also loves the quality of the gear.

“It’s holding up well to the weather. We do six months of the year out on the ocean and have strong wind and weather coming in while we are at dock, so they really cop it. Three years on and we have zero corrosion.”

Not only is the system robust, it sounds great too. “The sound quality is absolutely amazing. It’s a blast. It has met and exceeded my expectations.”

A quiet day in the shop for Andy turned into a fun exploration of marine systems and Bill ended up with everything he asked for and then some. Everyone won out here.

Surge Protection: What to look for when buying Surge Protection

We always suggest that our clients purchase a good quality surge protection power board, we stock the Thor Technologies brand. Most people are aware of, and understand, the reasons for needing good quality surge protection. Not the least of which is to protect what is generally a large financial investment.

The problem comes when people buy a surge board with little to no understanding of what they should be looking for, or what specifications they should be looking at. In the paragraphs that follow we shall try to simplify this process and stop people from using what is currently the two standard criteria:

Brand name:
I know "Brand X" as I have their "Y product"(Speaker Cables, iPod Dock, etc.)
The Point of Sale Suggestion:
I need a surge board, this one is cheap, here at the counter handy, and they all look the same anyway

These two criteria lead the majority of people to purchase a power board that is not going to give them the level of protection they think, or desire, and as such leave them with a false sense of security.

So what should you be looking for when you purchase a Surge and Filtration Power Board?

Firstly you need to look at its reaction time. This is how quickly the board will react when it detects a spike or surge. The Thor range have a reaction time of "less than 1 Nano Second", that is basically instantaneous.

The Second aspect to consider is the Clamping Voltage. The clamping voltage is how high the voltage spike has to go before the board will react. Some of the popular boards have a clamping voltage as high as 710v, by the time these boards activate most of your attached equipment is going to require a service agent. The Thor boards have a clamping voltage of 275v, so it will only take a small spike to cause these boards to go into protection mode and extend the life of your equipment.

The third item to look at is the Joules. This is the amount of power the board can absorb before it is no longer functioning as a surge protector. This is 6080 joules for the Thor A12 board. This means that the A12 will continue to protect your equipment till it absorbs 6080 joules, this can be in one big hit (lighting strike anyone?) or in multiple little hits over a number of years. Most surge boards on the market have no way of indicating when this limit have been reached, giving you the user no one of knowing if your equipment is still protected. Thor have corrected this by introducing a feature that stops the board itself from functioning once this limit has been reached. So with Thor, if the equipment plugged in still powers on then you are still protected.
